Constant Movement Isn’t Progress

car motion

As I looked out at the heavy traffic, I leaned back in my seat frustrated.

I pulled out my GPS to see how much time it would take to arrive at my destination. I was heading to meet some friends for dinner right after work and thought it would be a short ride.

35 minutes? For a normally 25-minute trip and the GPS showed some red areas in my path (heavy traffic)

Nope! I decided I would take some detours and beat the traffic

As I kept traveling and taking some side roads, I noticed some streets were closed off. I detoured and took other side streets until I finally arrived.

So glad to finally be at the restaurant, I looked at my clock dashboard to see how long it took.

I shook my head in amazement. I hadn’t stopped, but it still took 45 minutes to arrive!

Sitting there, a revelation came to mind.

Constant movement doesn’t mean progress.

I wanted to avoid the wait and I traveled in a longer direction to arrive at the same place.

Isn’t it crazy how we live life like that?

God might call us to wait, but we decide to take our own way. He might call us to avoid some relationships or some positions, but we rather be moving, searching, and seeking rather than being still.

It is so important to discern in our lives why sometimes God calls us to wait

Waiting can strengthen our trust and faith in God during a time of uncertainty

He renews our strength as we wait on Him  (Isaiah 40:31)

One thing that I noticed as I was driving was that I was relying on my limited perspective. I saw the line of cars in front of me and that led me to flee to find another direction.

However, when I initially inserted the directions, the GPS had the various route options. It was looking at things from a satellite perspective.

When we allow God to guide us, we are trusting that He has a higher perspective than our limited perspective.

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55:8-9)

Prayer: God, I trust you and I trust that you know what’s best for me. Even though I want to take control of some things or bypass your plans, I believe your ways are higher. I pray that I wait when you call me to wait and go when you call me to go.  I pray that I don’t run ahead of you, but rather walk in step and by faith where you call me to go.
